Business Planning – Do You Make These 5 Marketing Mistakes?

What is the one thing every business wants more of? Money! Are you struggling with how to take your business to the next level? Do you feel like you’re stuck in a stagnant place and are unsure of what actions to take to grow? You are not alone! As a business owner, you are busy constantly. There is not enough time in the day for everything. Making mistakes with your marketing efforts can only magnify some of your struggles. Read this to figure out if you are you making these 5 costly marketing mistakes.

Mistake #1: Winging it

Ever hear the expression: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance? This ties right into your marketing strategy. If you want results, you have to put in the proper planning and formulate a strategy, then execute accordingly. This is why it is called a marketing strategy. It takes time, effort, and research to develop the necessary marketing plan. This is crucial to the success of your marketing efforts. Too many businesses “wing it” whether it be for lack of knowing how else to attack it or pure laziness. You worked too hard to get your business up and running. Put some effort and time into developing a formalized Marketing Plan. Figure out who your target customer is and the best way to market directly to that target audience. You may already be wasting effort and money on marketing to the wrong audience! Do your homework. We promise… you will save time AND headaches in the long run.

Mistake #2: Giving Up Too Easily

What would we do without instant gratification today? Searching for answers literally takes seconds on our computers or cell phones. We have access to more knowledge at our fingertips than we could have imagined 10 years ago. Technology has embedded this need for instant gratification in our minds. It has created a society of people that give up way too easily. Like most success in life and business, marketing takes time and persistence. In fact most prospects need to be exposed to your company, its services, the benefits received or problems solved, 7-13 times BEFORE they will decide to purchase. Don’t think that one attempt at reaching out to a prospect will magically make them open their wallet. Don’t think that even 3 times of reaching out will do so. It make take 3, 6, or 9 exposures to get your prospects comfortable with you and your company. Marketing is a marathon and you have to be in it for the long haul.

Mistake #3: Not Adapting to Current Times

Remember when newspaper or radio ads were the most effective way for a company to advertise? Well along came the 21st century full of technology. Embrace it. If you don’t have an attractive, user-friendly website, you’re making a mistake that could turn new customers away and inhibit your growth. If consumers find it difficult to navigate or looking outdated, they may leave with a negative impression of your company and never return. Don’t allow this to happen.

Are you refusing to get your company on social media or advertise using video? This is also costly. The internet, social media, and video marketing are here to stay. If you want to have your business thrive for many years and generations to come, it’s best to get on board… now!

Mistake #4: Lack of Consistency

In order for marketing to be effective it has to be creative and consistent. Think “Out of sight, out of mind.” This is true with any prospect. You don’t know what situational changes are going to occur in their life that may cause it to be… The Right Time. You don’t want to miss the opportunity when it arises. If you haven’t been planting those seeds and nurturing them all along, you won’t be there when they are ready to harvest. The goal of marketing is to be the company in the forefront of the consumer’s mind when they raise their hand and need help. Many businesses make the mistake of sporadic marketing or marketing only when business is slow. Marketing needs to be continual to smooth out the seasonality of business cycles. Don’t let your business fall into this trap!

Mistake #5: Backing Off When Goals are Achieved

Finally, the 5th marketing mistake you may be making is backing off when goals are achieved. This mistake may be the worst one. It’s too easy to breathe a sigh of relief and relish in the success you have achieved. Successful businesses get comfortable when things are running efficiently. However, the issue comes with being too comfortable. As stated earlier, marketing efforts can take 3, or even 6 months to start showing results. This lag time is why discontinuing your marketing efforts, then desperately trying to ramp them back up can be extremely dangerous. It is much wiser to consistently maintain your marketing efforts, then amplify and enhance them as needed. After all, customers may come and go for a variety of reasons. Focus on keeping lifelong customers, and a marketing plan that will help generate new ones during good times and bad.

Marketing is not always fun to do or think about when there is so much else going on. At the end of the day though, marketing is important to the success of your business. Treat it as such and avoid these 5 marketing mistakes. Taking the time to plan and actually prepare with the necessary research will make it so much easier to perform the steps outlined. Don’t forget, persistence is needed for successful execution of your marketing plan. You believe in your business. Make sure your marketing efforts reflect that!

10 Extremely Important Tips for a Successful Business Launch

What’s Your Passion? If you are thinking about starting a business, it should be something you enjoy. Since a lot of time and energy goes into running a business, it is smart to look at your hobby or professional experience as a potential business idea. For example, if you are good at sewing, consider a tailoring shop; or an accountant could look at bookkeeping or tax service. Now, imagine what your life would be like if you spent the majority of your day actually doing what you love. Do you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? To improve your chances, here are 10 Extremely Important Tips for a Successful Business Launch.

Tip 1: The Name Game

Now that you’ve narrowed it down to ONE ‘business idea,’ you’ve got to figure out a name. A major challenge in starting a business is the process of searching and choosing the right business name. Choosing the right business name can mean success while a poorly thought out name could doom your business from the start. Three smart business name tips:

  1. A smart business name must be unforgettable. It is imperative that potential clients be able to remember your business name. I’m sure most people have heard of Nike, Walmart, Target, Home Depot and McDonalds. Like these household names, your name should be easy to pronounce and memorable.
  2. A smart business name must describe what your business does. When you create your business name, potential clients should be able to understand what products or services your company offers. For example in ‘ Browder Consulting Group,’ the word “Consulting’ is a clue that I provide specialized advice; or as in Lynn’s Styles & Cuts,’ the words ‘Styles & Cuts is a clue that this is a beauty salon.
  3. A smart business name should be as short and sweet as possible. As you advertise your business, it is important that your name display well on your marketing material, such as business cards, ad campaigns, domain name and email. As potential clients search for you on the internet, you want it to be an easy spelled and searchable name.

Tip 2: On a Mission

A mission statement is an important tool that tells others who you are, what you do, how you do it and why you are superior than your competition.

  • It identifies and clarifies the business’ vision, purpose and direction.
  • It provides the path and focus needed for making and implementing decisions.
  • It helps define to your future employees what they are doing, why they are doing it and where they are going.

Tip 3: Make it Legal

Be diligent in choosing the best Legal Form for your business. This is one of the first important decisions that you will have to make. This decision can have long-term implications, so here are a few things to consider when deciding which business structure is best for your business:

  • Scope of business you plan to attain
  • Size of your business
  • Business’s vulnerability to lawsuits
  • Tax implications based on the different ownership structures
  • Level of control do you wish to have
  • Expected profit/loss of the business

Tip 4: Surround yourself with a Progressive Team

Who do you need to know or collaborate with as a part of your external team? Having the right people on your team will allow you to focus on your business and help you to avoid costly mistakes. For example, you might need the following:

  • Certified Public Accountant: best form of ownership, establish bookkeeping, record keeping procedures and tax planning, etc.
  • Business Attorney: reviewing lease contracts, determining the right business structure, etc.
  • Computer Information Technician: set up systems, repair issues, etc.
  • Human Resource Management Consultant: assess your current HR processes for compliance, navigate through delicate labor issues, set up hiring processes, compensation and benefits and create employee manuals, job description and Standard Operation Procedural manuals.

Tip 5: Research Licenses & Permits Needed for Your Industry

As you can see, there are many steps involved in starting a business. With the daunting task of figuring it all out, it’s easy to overlook the important legal requirements associated with permits, licenses and registrations. Here’s a list that your business might need:

  • State Requirements: Business licensing requirements may vary from state to state.
  • Business Licenses: Depending on your state, county and city, a business license may be required for tax purposes and to conduct other basic business functions.
  • Occupations and Professions: Depending on your profession, state licenses may be required for occupations such as, appraisers, accountants, barbers, building contractors, cosmetologists, funeral directors, physicians, private investigators, private security guards and real estate agents.
  • Tax Registration: Some states carry a state income tax. If you establish your business in a state that does, you’ll have to register and obtain an employer identification number. If your business engages in retail sales, you will need to obtain a sales tax license.
  • Trade Name Registration: If you plan to run your business in your local community only, registering with the state may be adequate.
  • Employer Registrations: Are you planning to hire employees? If so, you’ll probably be required to make unemployment insurance contributions.

Tip 6: Know Your Clients

A common mistake that I encounter with new business owners is that they don’t know who their customer is… possessing a poorly defined target market. Most want to sell their products or services to ‘everybody’ instead of narrowing their targeted customer base to a manageable size. You must do your homework… i.e., market research. I’ve created a business resource guide to assist you, Resource Guide for Women.

Tip 7: Got Marketing?

In business, marketing plays a key role in getting the word out to your prospective clients. You must create an image and be consistent! It’s important to mold and hone your business image to successfully appeal to your prospects and customers. By choosing a relevant company name, answering your phone professionally, creating a professional and clear elevator pitch, investing in professional business cards, logos and brochures, etc… all are key in marketing your business.

Tip 8: Don’t forget Uncle Sam

Understanding tax obligations is one of the most important issues facing small businesses. The local, county, state and federal agencies does not care that you didn’t know or you forgot to pay your taxes. You will be subject to penalties for not paying on time. Here are some resources to assist you:

  • For a list of state agencies: business.gov/states/
  • For a SBA resource guide by state: smallbusiness3.com/magazine
  • For IRS business information: irs.gov/businesses/index.html

Tip 9: Don’t forget the ‘B’ Word… Budget!

Create a start up budget. Because businesses are different, each will have its own specific cash needs at various stages of development, so estimating your start-up costs may vary. Some businesses can be started on a shoestring budget, while others may require considerable investment in inventory or equipment. It is imperative to know that you will have enough money to launch your business venture.

A few ways to prepare:

  • Create a list of anticipated expenses for your first three years
  • Projections are fine, be realistic

Have a tracking system

QuickBooks, Quicken, Ledger, Excel spreadsheets, I don’t care which you use…. It’s important to put a system in place that works for you. Personally, I use QuickBooks. I can send files to my CPA, easy to work with. In addition, as the treasurer on the board of a non-profit organization, I also use Quick books to reconcile the organization’s bank statements and to bill our member’s annual dues.

Open a business checking account. The worst thing you can do is run your business from your personal account… it is an accountants nightmare. Open up a business account so that you can separate the two… plus it tells others that you are serious and professional.

Tip 10: Put it all together… in a plan!

Last but not least, you must write your business plan. By failing to plan, you are planning to fail. If you can’t take the time needed to plan for the success of your business, then don’t waste your time starting one. Statistics show that 8 out of 10 businesses fail within the first three years. This is staggering but true! Invest your time in researching and writing a business plan. Many prospective entrepreneurs think that a business plan is very hard and tedious. The truth is it’s a powerful tool that can help you plan and achieve business success.

So, what is this thing called a business plan? Well, a business plan is your blue print or what I tell many of my clients, it’s your bible! A business plan defines your business, identifies your goals, and serves as your company’s resume. It will help you arrange strategic alliances, obtain financing and attract key personnel. By planning for success, you will be able to overcome many hurdles that may arise.

A closer look at why a business plan is important:

  • To secure funding, your lender will request your business plan with completed financials. DO NOT approach a lender without having a completed business plan. In his/her eyes, you will look unprepared and too risky. By being prepared, you will have a better chance at securing funding for operations or expansion of your business.
  • It is a great way to test the feasibility of your business idea. By the time you complete your market or competitive analysis, you will have a clear picture of the viability of your idea.

As you can see, there is a lot of work involved before starting a business. To ensure success, it is important to research thoroughly, take advantage of the resources available to you and learn as much as you can. Preparation is key to a successful start!

Habits of Highly Successful Businesses

One of the greatest secrets of successful people is their pattern of behavior. A little study of successful people will reveal that there are certain habits, patterns, regular or repetitive and predictable behaviors.

Just as successful people are men and women of habits, certain habits are also common with successful businesses.

Highly effective and prosperous business organizations have great relevance and impact on people because they have developed habits.

What is habit? Habit is an action or pattern of behavior that is repeated so often that it becomes typical of somebody, although he or she may be unaware of it; somebody’s attitude or general disposition.

Every business has several habits, but not all repeated behaviours are of equal value. Some habits are detrimental and pernicious. For instance, someone having a drug habit (the repeated use of harmful drugs).

Most businesses have a number of harmful and unfortunate habits. To avoid creating and engaging bad habits, we must be very conscious of what we do, when we do it, why we do it and the outcome of those actions. There are habits that are harmful to businesses. When you engage any of these habits, to experience progress in such a business becomes almost impossible. Some of these harmful habits can ultimately destroy your business.

There are four elements that make habits desirable:

Intentional behavior: Unintentional business activity is not worth doing unless we can justify its implementations. All business efforts should be intentional and well directed toward the actualization of the goal and vision of the organization.

Strategic behavior: A habit becomes strategic when it is done purposefully and in relation to a specified desirable outcome. All habits should be consistent with the vision and purpose of the business organization.

Productive behavior: A habit is productive if it moves us closer to our business goal. Every habit that is not productive is counterproductive and therefore bad for the business.

Biblical behavior: It is possible for habits to be intentional, strategic and productive but to be outside the boundaries of Scriptures. Every habit must align with the principles of God’s word.

Successful businesses have numerous habits, but these habits are intentional, strategic, productive and Biblical. Here are some habits of highly successful business organizations:

Operate in large markets: Successful businesses operate in large and growing markets. The number of people that will need your product will determine how many sales you’ll make. It is wisdom to operate in large market.

Have unique products: Businesses that are making impact in the market place don’t go around marketing “me too” products. Their products are unique.

Have systems: Successful business organizations are known for their great systems. They have great structures in place.

Customer service: The real battle in the business arena is the battle for customer. As never before customers are surrounded with dozens or alternatives to choose from. Organizations that please customer well have upper hands in this battle for customer.

Not dependent on one person: Great businesses are not built around a person or personality. And this is one of the importances of running the business on solid systems.

Have great marketing: Every business thrives on good marketing. Successful business organizations know the importance of marketing. As a result, they invest money and time in their marketing.

They add value to customers: the number one goal of every business organization is to win and keep customers. Not really about making profits. Making profits might be the entrepreneur’s goal. But the business organization as an entity has one major goal, and that is to attract and keep customers. And key to achieving that is by adding value to their customer. So that, the customers can keep coming back. And also to refer their friends and neighbors.

They come up with new products: Successful business organizations don’t rest on their successes. They know that the success of yesterday will stink today. It is said that every product has shelf life of six months before becoming obsolete.

They have a big customer database: successful businesses keep good customer database. They know the importance of their customers. They keep good records of the customers.

They have high margins. Because their products are unique and they operate in large market. They have high margins. They can afford to raise the prices of their products without the fear of losing customers.

Take a few minutes to identify some of the many habits that define your business. Let’s meet in the comments!

To Your Prosperity
